Your new debit card is even more secure.

We take debit card security seriously, which is why we are introducing a new type of debit card called a chip card, also known as an EMV card. These cards use embedded microchips to authenticate payments.

To help you remember some key points about using a chip card, think CHIP:

Carry your chip card with confidence

By storing your card’s data on a chip, your account information can be changed dynamically with every use. This is a big advance from magnetic-stripe cards.

Harness its security advantage

Chip cards protect against fraud resulting from counterfeit, lost and stolen cards by providing strong transaction security features not possible with traditional magnetic-stripe cards. When chip cards were introduced in the U.K., fraud from lost and stolen cards was cut in half.

Insert your card in the terminal

Chip-enabled payment terminals are slightly different than traditional payment terminals. The cardholder inserts or “dips” the chip card into the reader. The card stays in the terminal during the transaction, similar to the way some ATMs work today. Depending on the merchant and the purchase amount, a PIN or signature may be required. Although your chip card still has a magnetic stripe to accommodate older terminals, if you swipe your card on a terminal turned on to read chip cards, the terminal may require you to insert your card into the chip reader.

Pocket your card when done

Don’t leave your card behind! Habits can be hard to break, so the first few times you are asked to insert your chip debit card into a chip-enabled terminal might be a little disorienting since you have to briefly let go of your card. Just remember to take your debit card from the terminal after the transaction is completed.

Here are two more helpful tips about chip cards:

  • International Standard – As those who travel internationally know, the chip card standard has been implemented in more than 80 countries around the world. There are an estimated 1.5 billion chip cards issued globally. Unlike your old magnetic-stripe card that might not work in all international locations, your debit chip card will work if you travel abroad.
  • Expect a Transition Period – It could take many months, if not years, for all merchants to transition to chip-enabled payment terminals. Not a problem – your debit chip card will work at new chip-enabled terminals as well as traditional terminals that can only read the magnetic stripe.

*Customers will receive their new EMV cards as their current debit card expires.
